If you’ve been following surf forecasts lately, you’ve probably seen the headlines.

A powerful El Niño could be developing.

For surfers planning a Mentawai trip, that usually leads to one question:

“Should I book now?”

The honest answer?

Maybe.

And that’s exactly why we wrote this article.

After 13 years of surfing and guiding these islands nearly every day, we’ve learned one simple truth:

No single weather pattern decides whether you’ll score the trip of a lifetime.

Not even El Niño.

First… What Is El Niño?

El Niño is a large-scale warming of the central and eastern Pacific Ocean.

It happens thousands of miles from Indonesia, yet its effects ripple across the planet, influencing weather patterns, storm tracks, rainfall, and wind.

For surfers, those changes can affect two things that matter most:

  • Wave quality
  • Swell consistency and power

But here’s where things get interesting…

Can El Niño Create Better Waves?

Sometimes.

One of the biggest ways El Niño influences surfing isn’t through the waves themselves.

It’s through the wind.

You can have a perfect six-foot swell arriving from the Southern Ocean, but if the wind is wrong, those dreamy walls quickly turn into a mess.

On the flip side, moderate swells paired with clean offshore winds can deliver sessions that stay with you forever.

That’s why experienced surf guides spend just as much time studying the atmosphere as they do watching swell charts.

The magic is rarely about one forecast.

It’s about how everything comes together.

What About Bigger Swells?

This is probably the biggest misconception.

You’ll often hear surfers say:

“It’s an El Niño year… expect massive waves.”

The reality is more nuanced.

El Niño can influence the position and intensity of Southern Hemisphere storm tracks, where many of the long-period groundswells that reach the Mentawais are born.

If those storm tracks become more active and better aligned, we may see:

  • More frequent long-period swells
  • More powerful swell events
  • Longer runs of consistent surf

But El Niño doesn’t create swell by itself.

Storm strength, fetch, duration, direction, and distance all play equally important roles.

Some El Niño seasons produce incredible runs of surf.

Others don’t quite live up to the hype.

Why the Mentawais Are Different

This is where local knowledge matters.

The Mentawais aren’t one wave.

They’re an entire coastline of possibilities.

A wind that ruins one break can make another come alive.

A southwest swell may light up one reef while another waits for a different angle.

Every morning starts with the same question:

“Where are today’s best waves?”

The answer changes every single day.

They chase the best conditions.

Be excited because every changing weather pattern creates new opportunities.
